On Wednesday 27th April the first team kicked off their season playing a reduced 40 over match against De Montfort University 1’s away. After a warm up in the snowy April weather we lost the toss and were put into bat on a soft track. Despite the unfavourable conditions we made a confident start with Viv and Teds making 25 and 24 respectively. This came to an end with Viv nicking off to first slip. This saw an end to any meaningful partnerships with others getting starts but not going on and seeing us eventually slump to 118 all out in the 34th over, a below average total but we saw it as defendable due to the conditions.
In reply the De Montfort openers got off to a slow start with the bat, although the 33 extras bowled in our innings meant the pressure was reduced and they started to slowly knock off the runs. Despite one of the openers best efforts to get caught behind once he did get caught behind he didn’t walk, which led to him going on to scoring at a painfully slow rate. After he played some huge shots which barely cleared the 30 yard circle, he was then cleaned up by Jezza, who was one of our best bowlers, taking 2 wickets. One of these was followed by a contender for send-off of the season as Jezza bowled the hard hitting De Montfort number 5 and gave him the middle finger as a goodbye. Despite us bowling and fielding very well, leading to us taking 3 more wickets De Montfort managed to complete the run chase with 5 overs to spare.
The man of the match was Jezza Roach mainly for his send off, but also for his consistent bowling and leaving a straight one while batting. Roll on next Monday.
